Finding Fanny is a movie released yesterday starring five great Indian actors. It is about a quest for Love. A quest for your Self really. A mad ride of five people in a vintage car to look for the beloved of one of them. How their lives get enmeshed deeper, how they face their long-buried tragedies after their car's petrol gets over, how they find refined versions of themselves, starting from the small village of Pokoli in Goa, can be seen from the movie. One of the five, Angie (Deepika Padukone) is the narrator and tells us not to 'find Pokoli' coz we won't even get it- it's such a small non-descript village! Still I tried using 'Google Guru'- and found it looks like name of a hispanic video game...:P...with an image like this:
Well, so it IS a fictional village, yet so real as the movie portrays it! And of course, the controversy surrounding the use of the word 'fanny'. 'What's in a name?' Shakespeare said. And I say- it's artistic freedom. Glad the Court held this verdict too!
Stefanie 'Fanny' Fernandes is a girl Fernando loved 46 years ago and still loves- he's still in a time warp- seeing her exactly the same way in his thoughts and dreams.
I loved when he saw a dream, woke up and said- "Fanny, how can you cry underwater?" He's serious, but the audience was in splits. There are many such 'Funny Fanny' moments in the movie. In the end, puppet song is also highly creative yet 'Shut the faniya up' sounds rather vulgar if one knows the meaning of 'fanny', but **cool** if one is blissfully unaware about it! :P
In the end, Fernando finds her and still does not find her.
Yet, the journey is fascinating. The movie is only about 100 minutes long and filled with sarcasm, humour, satire, unexpected turns, realisations.
My take-aways:
a) Death is also a joke, life too (shown by incidents of cat's, Pankaj's and surprisingly- Fanny's character).
b) Lies are needed to live life. Yet, at a stage they have to be admitted too.
c) Relationships need not be bound in marriage- they can be faithful outside it too.
d) Brakes fail. Yet life does not.
e) No one knows an artist's imagination. How he paints a woman, can be downright exasperating as well. [Still we say 'wow'. Modern art huh?]
And what to say about the actors. Each of them is a gem. Still, I'll rank best performance as that of Nasseruddin Shah (Fernando). He's outrightly sensitive, funny in a simple way, so honest, so brilliant. Dimple Kapadia (Rosy) comes next for me. She is wild, stylish, jovial, a downright sport to be a representative symbol of movie Finding 'fanny', so elegant, so true to her role. Pankaj (as the painter) and Deepika (as Angie) both come next for me for they are exceedingly outstanding in their respective parts. Deepika plays a bold, yet sensitive and conservative character. Quite an oxymoron really. Still, she pulls it off with flying colors. As the car owner and romantic painter, Pankaj plays an awesome character. Finally, Arjun (as Savio) is the angry young man and does very well too.
The movie as per me is 3.5/5. Watch it for a change- travel the Goan countryside, listen to Goan songs, live the Goan life for a while- easy, relaxed and of course, find love, joy, passion, fun and some revelations! :)
**Linking this to ABC Wednesday for letter 'J' (Just, Joy, Jovial).

Waiting for my daughters'exams to get over. So many movies lined up with FF topping the list. It's the cast ensemble that's got me hooked. Your take of this village is exciting and is just what i am hoping it to be.
